Eutrophication causes invertebrate biodiversity loss and decreases cross-taxon congruence across anthropogenically-disturbed lakes

چکیده

Eutrophication is a major problem currently impacting many surface water ecosystems. Impacts of increased nutrient concentrations on biodiversity may differ between different scales, organism groups, and trophic states. Surveys at spatial scales have suggested that taxa exhibit significant cross-taxon congruence. In our study, we examined the diversity zooplankton zoobenthos across 261 lakes in Lake Taihu watershed, an area undergoing severe eutrophication process. We tested congruence species richness Shannon-Wiener along gradient lakes. Our findings were consistent with intermediate disturbance hypothesis, considering input as disturbance. Also, found diversities. results confirmed excess levels resulted loss community simplification. Zoobenthos more sensitive to increases compared zooplankton, which decreased because these groups did not respond similarly anthropogenic

Competition for light causes plant biodiversity loss after eutrophication.

Human activities have increased the availability of nutrients in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In grasslands, this eutrophication causes loss of plant species diversity, but the mechanism of this loss has been difficult to determine. Using experimental grassland plant communities, we found that addition of light to the grassland understory prevented the loss of biodiversity caused by eutr...

Invertebrate Diversity in Anthropogenically Disturbed Forest of Maruthamalai Hills, Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, South India

Anthropogenic Biomes describe globally significant ecological patterns within the terrestrial biosphere caused by sustained direct human interaction with ecosystem, including agriculture, urbanization, forestry and other land uses. The present study focused on the invertebrate diversity in Marudhamalai Hills which is highly disturbed by human activities. Different techniques to identify the dis...

Biodiversity loss decreases parasite diversity: theory and patterns

Past models have suggested host-parasite coextinction could lead to linear, or concave down relationships between free-living species richness and parasite richness. I explored several models for the relationship between parasite richness and biodiversity loss. Life cycle complexity, low generality of parasites and sensitivity of hosts reduced the robustness of parasite species to the loss of f...

Agricultural Extensification and Biodiversity Loss in Ikom Cross River State, Nigeria

The study analyzed agricultural extensification and biodiversity loss in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study used primary data with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire to collect data from one hundred and ten respondents (110) through simple random sampling technique. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as inferential statistics. The results revealed that ...
